Entries from October 2008

This was the First in my exploration of “odd” shapes. I first started with an oval shape and than progressed to Square and Rectangular shapes. I used my Grandmother’s hand made Lace for the design pattern. THis is a Flower design from like 1925 (she came over from Poland in the Early 1900’s at the age of 12) It was a flower she remembered from the Tatra Mountains of Poland and she was a Gorale or Highlander.
Anyway, it keeps with my Mountian Flower theme, so there ya go. I have to work on my picture taking since the first larger picture doesn;t do this glaze or pot any justice. However on a closer look you can see the MAGIC in this WaterFall Brown Glaze. I love it with this pot! Man. . . when you get a piece like this….WOW.

Slab built Tall mugs with pulled handles. I had fun with these, first time ever doing slab built or hand built mugs, not perfect but I like the way they feel in my hand. And being taller , I can get a bit more creative with glazes. Hummmmmm the possibilities

I got an idea from Cynthia’s blog http://coloradoartstudio.com/blog/page/2/ She does a lot of hand building, etc and she has these mugs on her blog that I thought were cute. So I tried my hand at hand building Tall Mugs with my Mtn Flower theme. They were fun and I think I will add handles as well once they set up a bit.
I took that hand building technique and added some more salt and pepper shakers with the same design. I have one more set of stoppers and than I am done with salt and pepper.
I really like my platters and hope that the 8 I have make it through the next few firings, etc. I have altered the feet differently on each one so we will see.

I like the wine coolers as well and came up with 4, I think might make a nice holiday gift perhaps with some wine?
That’s it for this morning. We’ll see what I come up with for later in the the day?

I roll out a slab of clay, measure the width of my wine bottle and than add 2-3 inches. In case in shrinks alot, add more. I know my clay and it’s less than 10% shrink rate and I have tubes already bisqued that my wine fits into. I also don;t leave alot of room for ice, so if you want lots of ice, add size accordingly.
Than I cut my slabs and make designs in the clay. I use a DVD for the circle or bottom of my wine cooler becasue that is the size I use. You can use anything that will give you a circle for the bottom. I add feet to the bottom as well, so my cooler sits off the table some.
I cut the 2 sides of the slab with my hand held wire tool at a 90 degree angle (opposite for each side) So I can score and paste the sides together for a smooth seam.
Than add the bottom and I use a coil of clay for the inside to help it have a smooth seam in the bottom as well. ANd TA DA a Wine Cooler!

Today felt like a chore day. Not much throwing happening today. A very physical day in fact. Started out cleaning my house, which was a bit messy. I got a new filter on my vacumm cleaner and a new filter on my furnance for the colder days, so cleaning my studio seemed like a good idea. Took forever! Happy to say tho it’s spotless for a studio and smells lemony as well
Had to get some things together for Real Estate, still amazing that the market is moving given the news, etc.
Than off to Denver, Mile High Ceramics, to get some clay, Zinc Oxide, and a few mason stains to experiment with. Unload the car, by that time it was well after lunch, so I took a break and ate lunch.
Mixing up some glazes in the garage, cream, brown, waterfall brown, and bright sky blue. Whew! That is alot of work. I still am low on Licorice, and Rasberry and maybe Emerald as well. They will have to wait until tommorrow. Too Tired.
Back in the studio, I added Feet to some platters, and came up with Salt and pepper shakers. Never made those before but I have a customer request them and so well. . .gave it a try. I bought the stoppers at the Ceramic store today (6 for 60 cents). So I can make 3 sets.

The Bottoms aren’t trimmed up yet, but this is the idea so far. They will be a bit rounder and the stoppers I will fit for them tommorow. What do you think? Can I make it as a salt and pepper potter? Hummm

I have about 8 platters made and drying. 2 have gone through the bisque just fine but one didin’t make it.It cracked during the bisque firing. 2 Warped. So out of 11, so far I have 8 that look good. The odds are not in my favor with Platters. I can see why some folks don’t like to make them and how they can warp, etc. Still ,when they work, beautiful! So we’ll see.

http://hppottery.com/home.html Debbie Sells came up with a great idea for Holiday Sales and a Recipe for Chocolate cake. . . Hence the name YUMMY POTS!http://groups.yahoo.com/group/potterybasics/message/23608
5 Minute Yummy Chocolate Cake
4 T Self Rising Flour
4 T Sugar
2 T Baking cocoa
1 Egg
3 T Milk
3 T Vegetable Oil
3 T Chocolate Chips
Small splash of Vanilla
Spray Yummy Pot with Pam. Mix dry ingredients. Add remaining ingredients
and mix again. Pour into Yummy Pot and microwave on High for 3 minutes.
Cake will rise over the top of Yummy Pot, but don’t be alarmed! Allow to
cool a few minutes and enjoy. It is even yummier, if you add a scoop of ice
cream. Serves 2.
With a Yummy Pot and this recipe, you are only 5 minutes away from chocolate
cake any time of the day or night! Enjoy!

I have a craft fair coming up Nov 6,2008 and thought these “YUMMY POTS” might be a great idea as well so Deb, Here’s my version of your Yummy Pots. I’ll let you know how it goes, but I’m hoping for good sales as well! Since they will be HOT I put handles on them to grab onto out of the Microwave.

Here’s an update on your Casserole dish with a Lid. It is basically finished except for the bottom and smoothing the Lid once it drys enough to be handled.
Hi Becky, this casserole and process is for you! You bought one of my rectangular dishes recently and want one, larger, to match, with a lid. First I throw a large bowl with a “Lip” for the Lid. Than I take out the bottom of the bowl so I can Square it up.

The Lip catches the lid so it doesn’t touch the wonderful food you will have inside. Than I roll out a flat piece of clay or a Slab. This is 15 and half inches long. Next I attach the Wheel thrown side to the flat slab clay to attach a new bottom so my piece can take on a rectangular shape. It takes up a bit of clay so now the piece is about 13 or almost 14inches long and about 10 inches on the side.

The depth is about 4 inches tall. So you will have a dish a bit shorter than this when the piece drys and bakes in the kiln. Should be about 12 by 9 and about 3 inches deep. After it sets up a bit I will add the handles you like that look like petals and the lid will be placed over the piece to give it a bit of a curve or “hump”.
I’ll add more pictures as I finish up this piece for you! So stay tuned!

Well, they tasted good for dinner last night! The regular baguette with jelly and butter in the morning with coffee is a go! The Salami and cheese split out of the baguette while baking and I have to be careful to “pinch” the seams before they “rest” and prior to baking. Other than that, Yummy!

I made 4 of these cute little LONG trays. I Really had fun designing them and forming them, etc. I think they will be a hit for the holidays! Hope so!
