Oval shaped casserole
May 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment
So it looks like I’ll be doing another show in Parker, Colorado in July. I thought some OVAL shapes might be fun? So I came up with this Oval Casserole Dish. It’s FAMILY SIZE, since there are a lot of families at this art show. It’s about 14 inches long and 6 inches deep. The lid is shaping up to be a bit curved. When it is set more, I will flip it over, smooth the edges and place a handle on the lid!

Baby Bird
May 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment
Well I think my neighbor’s think I finally “lost it”. What ever “it” is. Not really sure I ever had “it” anyways. . . My Christmas wreath is still on my front door. Now most people would think well, just take it down.
Hummmm, being a potter and all, that seems easy enough, knowing potter’s make dinnerware out of mudd. However, there is just this one little problem. There is a nest in my wreath and at least one baby bird sleeping in it! Not sure if you can see it in the picture but I can see it breathing. I can only see one, not sure if there are more or not?
Looks like the parents maybe Youngin’s, very small and thin looking. Well, looks like my wreath isn’t going anywhere until it’s an empty Nester! Now how to explain that to my neighbor’s and the HOA? Hummmm

New bowl and Pitcher
May 22, 2009 · 3 Comments
Well the show is over, Getting ready for July! Still have time though so I thought I would have some fun! Throwing big bowls is Joyful for me and adding a stem piece adds to that enjoyment! So here’s my first large bowl after the June show! WHEW! Good to be back throwing again!
I like the pitcher and goblets, so I thought another set might be fun! I think I am staying with a stem theme! I have more to explore here!

2nd day at the show
May 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment
Today, Saturday, was by far the LONGEST day in history , I’m sure. It started out at 7:30am and was Extremely WINDY. 4 Artist’s lost their tents today. One lost alot of his photography and it was mounted in glass with frames. Another was a glass artist, not good. The Third didn’t loose any work just his BRAND NEW EZ UP tent it was trashed by the wind. The 4th just up and left mid day.
I stuck it out and my tent has held up so far. I guess I made a commitment and so I followed through. Plus I think if you leave mid way through, it would not look good for you to try and get in that show again or you could not use them as a reference for future juried shows. So either way I think you stick it out, make the best of it and plan differently next time.
I ended up taking the sides down in hopes of keeping my TENT grounded. Whew! I lost 2 large platters and 4 wine goblets to the wind today.
The good news was it rained all night, my tent was still standing when I got there this AM and it was dry inside my tent. Whew!
As far as sales, not a huge crowd but I sold well. About 1/2 my pottery is gone, and I walked away with money in my pocket today.
I’ve been told tomorrow will be better, we’ll see?

Show set up and pottery display
May 16, 2009 · 2 Comments
My booth is number 25 and I have a corner location off mainstreet. You can see the cars and trucks go by <G> Very Windy here so I have 60 lb bags of sand to hold up my tent.
Milk crates and wooden shelves mainly for display. I couldn’t go too high because of the winds. Maybe tommorrow (Saturday) I can ?
The first day (Today) was advertised 5:00pm to 8:00PM. Not a huge crowd but I did well. Made enough to cover my booth fee for the entire week-end and paid for my new tent 10 x 10 ( am the only one that doesn’t have a white tent). Plus some money ahead. So not a bad first day. The other vendors have been kind and helpful!
The folks that juried the show, asked me if I would consider putting my pottery in their new furniture store in Denver on consignment. They are looking for 4 artists and they would take what I didn’t sell this week-end, so I wouldn’t even have to deliver. They have a grand opening on June 1,2009. They like my work and would like to display and sell it for me. I would get what my asking price was and they would raise it a bit in the store to cover some of their costs! Sweet!
This is mainstreet Parker, very quaint and the booth next to me is a bit farther away. Lots of space for me on this corner location with the parking lot to the right of this photo, my car is just feet away from my tent!
You can see the parking lot and how close it is.
That is one of my side walls and MAINSTREET. Very tired and will be back at 8:00am to do this all over again!

Yellow Glaze Cone 6 Oxidation
May 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment
Well so far I am able to get 3 different yellows in cone 6 Oxidation. And I have to say,Mastering cone 6 glazes, the book by John and Ron Roy, is amazing as I test more and more glazes. What those guys shared in that book, was a ton of knowledge in glaze chemistry.
Why, well you could test other Potter’s glazes, all day long, and still not get the results you want since they mostly tweak their glazes to fit there area (ie clay body and chemicals mined). However, I get good results in my testing of glazes with MC6G and they are mostly food safe as well. I use the Software program with MC6G and can test the unity formulas, etc. BRILLIANT is all I can say! And a Big Thank you!
1. The first MUSTARD Yellow is straight from Raw Sienna and it’s a high calcium semi matt glaze. I can get this affect by slow cooling and a cone 6 bending 4-5 o’clock (not fully melted cone 6). I really like this matt finish with a bit of glossy waterfall brown on the edges.
2. This test tile is clear liner Glaze dipped one time and than My mixture of Clear liner glaze and rutile dipped one time. On a dark chestnut clay body. It’s a really nice soft glossy yellow. Great on details or stamp designs in clay.
3. Butter Satin Glossy glaze, you can fine recipe in clayart achieves, Carol Tripp posted it to be tested, etc. She was right it does look this the sun. I learned about Calcine the EPK in this glaze and can put that in a bowl in the bisque firing to get that affect.
I thought that MC6G was just the colors shown in the book but I was wrong, depending on how you slow cool (THAT IS THE SECRET) you can get amazing results. I will be exploring those in the next month, if time and money allows! I have alot to learn!
