Entries from August 2009

I made some cream and sugar bowls. The creamers have “beaked” spouts on them. Also some “beaked pitchers.

What is a BEAKED spout you ask? Hummmm I have NO idea. I was taught a beaked spout looks like this. It comes up higher than the rim of a pot, and is shaped similar to a tea pot spout but it is open not closed. Where they came from I have no idea. Why they are called “BEAKED” beats me? Do I even have the details correct? I have no clue.

This is a Beaked Whale? hummmm
However, I do like them, They remind me of a bird’s beak? And I think they pour well. Hummmmm If you have any more info. please share since I have no clue~

Beaked sauce boat crete like 2300 bc or something really OLD!

Beaked jug. . . Very OLD

So I was thinking about what else I could bring to the Farmer’s Market on SEPTEMBER 5,2009 (from 8:00am-12:00) And I was looking on line (rather shopping. . . .
I really have fun making my square Canister sets and thought what else could go with that?

Hummmm how about some Condiment trays, etc.????

So I thought that maybe the goal for today would be some squarish trays. . .

Here’s what I came up with but these pictures are my insipration today! Barona Style. . . .
Oh and this one is for Gary Rith http://grpottersblog3.blogspot.com/ He’s into SKULLS and so is the Pottery Barn. Go figure?
Just for you Gary! ******GRIN******

After throwing today, I actually managed to clean up my work space in my garage. A clean pile of tools and I forgot my wheel was actually WHITE …GRIN!

I actually made some stacking bowls (set of 3) for cooking or serving. Little handle bowls, and some oval bakers.

More MUGS, I am beginning to like them more, with little trays/saucers for them as well.

Another series of square storage canisters.

Oh yeah, that’s my Real Estate signs behind my pottery. I actually had a closing this last week and a strong listing currently as well. Still not the same volume and income I am used to. Thank my LUCKY hands for POTTERY to make ends meet somewhere in the middle these days!
More oval /serving bakers and they are drying fast. You can actually see the wetter/green stage and what is drying fast. The bakers I threw early in the day and let them bake some in the sun today. Wow, takes a few days of dry down to like 1 in the sun!

Usually in the winter, when my studio is inside, I have to wait at least a day for leather hard to put handles on or trim, etc. However, in the summer, and in my garage, it’s all done in a day. The sun bakes the green ware some, enough to trim and put handles on. Makes for a longer but productive day!

I can’t think of a better Venue for me than the Castle Rock Farmer’s Market. I was asked to participate Yesterday since I only signed up for 3 dates. What a blast! The folks in my neighborhood were amazing and the SUPPORT was fantastic! I had a great time, made awesome sales in just a little over 4 hours.
There were a ton of folks there, and I got to meet the folks actually buying my pots, etc. I ran out of business cards by 9:30am, only had 100 with me and I handed them out when asked by someone. Who knew? I should have had more but you learn.
I added a Black carpet in the middle of my tent floor. I think it added a bit of class to the set up, plus folks with babies were able to set them down for a bit as well. The carpet was 8 by 5 which fit nicely into my 10 x 10 tent and the best part was, new it cost only $19.00
My next Farmer’s market in Castle Rock will be SEPT 5,2009 which should get a jump on holiday buying!

Darlene met me at the Farmer’s Market and had a problem. Seems she has butter that is bigger than a regular stick of butter. Hummmmm
She wanted a cobalt blue butter tray that fits her special butter. She sent me her dimensions and I came up with this one. Oh and she wanted a handle for the cover. I added feet to the tray for more “presence”.

Sat is another Farmer’s Market here in Castle Rock,Colorado and I will be there! I have some new pottery for this show. . . HUmmmmm

I fired up my Kiln this AM and it’s glowing this evening. Should be able to take a peek sometime Tuesday. I tried John Post’s (variation of Pete Pinnell’s) Tomato Red #13. I was between 10-12% Iron Ox so we shall see, I ran out and was planning on 14%.

New for this week end are little mugs with saucers. Very CUTE!

Than I have a few rather Large Platters ( they look like really BIG plates). Well I should say
for me They are BIG!

Really BIG Bowls, are you getting a theme here. . . . . Hint….BIG!

A bunch more waiting to be glazed and they will go in the kiln next while the new pieces dry some more . . . .Whew! Glad my kiln likes to work OVER TIME <G>!

I’ve been throwing in my garage lately instead of my basement studio. Change of pace, and the warm weather, plus clean up is so much easier in the garage. So for what it’s worth, that’s where my work had been lately.
I’ve been asked to come to the Farmer’s Market August 22,2009. I could have had more dates but I wasn’t prepared. So unexpected, my plan was next show Sept 5,2009. So here I am with just under one week to go!
I have some new canisters, butter dishes, and More COLORADO MUGS,etc. If my glaze firings goo well I should be ready with some new stuff for Saturday.

My work space, well it needs a clean up but that will have to wait! Thank goodness for the hose and the garage floor <G>.

Some greenware drying, a funky shaped mug with FEET, a new CHOP mark that I place on work I feel is especially good, mugs!

I had a few custom orders to fill and they are ready: Joan wanted some plates and bowls. . ..
Here is her order prior to packing it all up!
Here’s the other order for Wine Goblets in PURPLE or PLUM. . .
Just before packing as well.
I have a special order Butter Dish that is drying for someone “special” and should be done this week!
Out of the Kiln Glazes. . .
Black and Blue on the rim of this bowl!

Someday I will have a photo light box, but for today this pics will have to do! That’s it. . . .I’m outta here for this evening! Have a great evening and FRIDAY!

I had a few orders (YEAH) from my Farmer’s Market and I finished them all today, yeah me! I drove to Denver for more supplies and than got to work first thing this AM! My 4 Wine Goblets are thrown and drying as well as 2 smaller wine Glasses. Also, my set of plates, salad plates, bowls and mugs are ready as well. I just have to fire one bowl and that will be complete for Friday AM pick up.
That left me with the rest of the day for fun! Well you’d think I couldn’t throw. I picked up some new clay and it was sooooooSoft I had a hard time throwing anything large. I tried out lace and slip but that was a pain. This technique will take a bit more thought and practice. Hummmm
So Maybe tomorrow will be better for throwing! I hope so!
Have a great Day! I’m outta here. . . .Mary
